RSLAB members (NTUA partner) performed field tests with the Slocum G3 underwater glider in the Corinthian gulf in Greece, near Antikyra from the 23rd to the 25th of August 2024. The team, led by Prof. Konstantinos Karantzalos and consisting of Dr. Valsamis Ntouskos, Christos Antoniou, Panagiotis Mertikas, Simon Vellas, and Sotiris Spanos, performed several test missions in the sea, exploring different maneuverability options of the glider, including the helix trajectory that will be extensively used for monitoring the radioactivity in the confined space of the Kolumbo submarine volcano. The team tested in parallel the acoustic and localization equipment as well as the γ-sniffer mounted on the glider by collecting gamma radioactivity measurements. During the missions, the glider reached a depth of 420m, an important milestone towards the RAMONES final field deployment at the active submarine volcano Kolumbo, north of Santorini island, the active area of which lies at 500m depth.
RSLAB team is now actively preparing for the experiments of the final stage of the RAMONES project at Kolumbo, which will take place from 19/10- 1/11.
